Sonia Sotomayor

Although I can’t say I’m much involved in politics, I come from a family which places great importance on the matter. At home, the TV is usually turned onto either CNN or AlJazeera, and thus, I’ve come to develop some sort of understanding about the global political stage.
One hot story in the news that my family followed very closely was that of Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearing before her appointment to the Supreme Court. President Obama had nominated her as Supreme Court Justice, and there was a lot of criticism afterwards, because people thought Sotomayor to be racist. This was due to the fact that she had made a statement years earlier saying that a “wise Latina woman” could better come to a conclusion than a White man.
I watched parts of Sotomayor’s hearings on TV, and in fact, it was the first time I had heard of these confirmation hearings, that apparently all nominees to the Supreme Court go through. I must say, I was impressed by the manner in which Sotomayor responded to the tough and critical questions coming her way. She coolly answered questions about sensitive topics such as abortion and gun control, which in my opinion, demonstrated that she would do an excellent job on the Supreme Court. The fact that she would be the first Latina Justice was something grand in my eyes. Obama made history when he was elected as America’s first African American president, and I was glad that he was trying to further push the limits by introducing the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice in his administration.  I haven’t kept tabs on Sotomayor’s doings after she was granted the position, but I’m sure she is doing a great job on the Supreme Court!
